Article 12 Council
The Article 12 Council supports the ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ initiative, and is one of the rights set out in the UNCRC (United Nation Convention on the Rights of a Child). Article 12 is about Pupil voice and promoting this throughout the school community and wider. The Article 12 Council is in its second year at Roding and it is fast becoming a successful part of school movement and development. Children are elected, in the main, by their peers, at the beginning of the school year. From this they become Article 12 Ambassadors and meet on a fortnightly basis, discussing a range of school issues and new ideas. They are also the bridge to ALL children and with the support of the Class teacher, they run Class Council sessions, collecting views and presenting information.
This year, the Article 12 have developed Charters (A set of guidelines that remind children of their rights and how to adhere to them) in the Playground, Lunch Hall, Toilets and the Library. They have conducted several surveys, collecting information and then analysing this to improve things further. E.G How school assemblies are conducted. The Council put a plea, researched and worked with the PFA to purchase new playground equipment. They have worked with ISS (Our Catering Company) to offer their suggestions for even further improvements. Recently, we have introduced new signage, naming our three main collection points to the school. The Article 12 designed these and as a result this will help the school community in locating the correct point of entry –particularly at the start of the new academic year.
The Article 12 Council also coordinate our fundraising. Information will be posted in our newsletters, on a regular basis.
We are proud of our children and will always support them in ‘being heard.’
