BSL Level 1

BSL Level 2

We are also planning to start a Level 2 course, also in September 2019 and, again, dependent on there being enough enrolled candidates. Again, we are asking possible candidates to complete the application form and return this to us if you are interested. Please note that there are two options we are providing candidates as to how they may wish to learn this year; through either a 33 week, term time only course, for 3 hours per session, or a 40 week course, running for 2 and a half hours per session. The latter would involve some attendance during the school holiday periods. Depending on preferences and levels of interest, we will decide upon which option is best and invite candidates to confirm their places. Please also note that to confirm your place on Level 2, you must be able to evidence your Level 1 qualification and attend a meeting with the BSL instructor, to assess your suitability for the course. Further details are on the application form.

Enrolment

Submitting the application form does not confirm a place for you on the course, however we will treat completed application forms as a firm indication of your interest. There are a maximum of 15 places available; should there be more applications than places available, places will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis, as indicated by the date you returned your application form. Of course, once the day and times of the course are agreed, should this not meet your requirements, you are welcome to withdraw your application from the course at no cost to you. Those candidates on the waiting list for a place will then be contacted to take up any places left vacant. Once places are offered, candidates will have 7 days to confirm or withdraw their place, otherwise you may lose your place should you not contact the school within that time.

Key Information

  • The BSL Level 1 course costs £435 for the full year which includes a full 32 week face-to-face course based at Roding Primary School for 2 hours each week including all resources required. This is, on average, about 20% cheaper than most other colleges offering a tutored, class based course.
  • The BSL Level 2 course costs £630 for the full year which includes either a full 33 week face-to-face course based at Roding Primary School for 3 hours each week including all resources required or a 40 week course running for 2 and a half hours a week. This is again, on average, about 5-10% cheaper than most other colleges offering a tutored, class based course.
  • Assessments take place three times across the year in order to complete the course. Fees for this are in addition to the above course fees and are £22, £37 and £37 (BSL Level 1) and £42, £52 and £52 (BSL Level 2) respectively and are payable prior to sitting these exams.
  • Assessments are fully accredited by Signature, the leading awarding body for deaf communication qualifications in the UK. Further details about Signature can be found here. We are a fully accredited BSL training centre, as approved by Signature.
  • A deposit of £45 (BSL Level 1) or £60 (BSL Level 2) is required to secure your place. This will be invoiced to you once the course details are confirmed and we receive your application form and must be paid before the first day of the course.
  • It is anticipated that the first week of each course will either be the w/c 9th or 16th of September 2019 and will run on the same day each week during school term times. Sessions will not take place during the school holidays. The only exception to this would be if, based on preferences, the centre decides to run its Level 2 course over a 40 week timetable, in which case some attendance during holidays would be required.
  • The maximum number of places on offer per course is 15.
  • Children between the age of 11 and 18 are welcome to attend. However, any children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent; either on a supervisory basis or as a fully registered candidate.
  • If there is enough interest in running the course on more than one day, then we are open to having a second course running on a different day of the week, however that is dependent on there being enough places being taken to fill the places.

Key Contacts

Course Tutor - The course is delivered and tutored by Elizabeth Cordwell, our qualified BSL tutor. Lizzie has worked at Roding Primary School for over 9 years supporting deaf children at the school’s Provision for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children. She has been delivering BSL courses for a number of years and, this year, has helped guide 9 candidates through to be fully accredited for units 101 and 102 moving towards full BSL Level 1 qualification by the end of the year. Prior to this, Lizzie guided 5 students through to becoming fully accredited at Level 1. Lizzie is deaf herself so is able to give a unique insight into communicating in BSL in the wider world.

Course Administrator – All enquiries relating to payment, attendance and enrolment should be addressed through me, Nilesh Pandya, the School Business Manager. If you have any questions about the course, I am happy to help and if I can’t answer your questions, I will endeavour to put you in touch with Lizzie or whoever the relevant person is.

We have included the Signature Welcome Pack and advertisements for the two BSL courses. We request that all application forms are returned by June 21st 2019 so we may finalise details, however we may consider application after this date, if you are unable to meet this deadline.

If you have any questions about the course, please do get in touch at admin.rodingprimary@redbridge.gov.uk. We look forward to hearing from you and very much hope to see you soon as your centre of choice for learning British Sign Language.
