Forest School

What is Forest School and why is it important?

Learning outside provides opportunities to continue building on the skills that are taught inside the classroom but in a different environment and with different challenges. Visiting the forest allows the children to see for themselves the changes that are created by the changing weather and seasons as well as wildlife and plants up close and in a natural environment. Visiting the forest encourages the children to take part in imaginative and explorative play and benefits all areas of their development.

Forest School originated in Scandinavia with the belief that all children, no matter their age, benefit greatly from the hands on learning opportunities that a woodland environment presents.

Forest School is an inspirational learning experience that provides...

* Health benefits that are connected to being outdoors

* Integration with the Early Years  Foundation Stage Curriculum and National Curriculum

* Time for children to learn, explore and reflect

* Opportunities for fun, imagination and creativity

Forest School helps to develop;

Confidence and self-esteem
Communication and social skills
A greater understanding and care for the natural environment
Motivation and a positive attitude to learning
Creativity and imagination.

We are extremely fortunate at Roding that we do have access to an outdoor woodland area.  The Forest School programme is taught throughout Early Years and Year 1.  As well as this we strongly encourage Year2-Year 6 to make use of the outdoor space.
